EAST LANSING, Mich. – A lone Nittany Lion goal in the 49th minute proved to be the difference on the Spartans' Senior Day, as No. 7 Penn State topped Michigan State, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Ralph Young Field in Big Ten field hockey action.
Â
Anna Simon's late tally improved PSU to a 12-4 record and a 5-3 mark in the conference, while MSU moved to 7-7 on the season and 0-7 in the Big Ten.
Â
Both sides had chances early in the first quarter, including a PSU save off a shot by freshman Ellie Rutherford, before the Green and White were awarded two penalty corners as time expired in the frame. Neither corner attempt was successful off the insert, as a shot from junior Merel Hanssen was saved and that was followed with a shot wide from senior Nienke Bloemsaat on the second corner.
Â
Penn State then kept MSU from recording a scoring chance for two quarters but could not get through a tough Spartan defense and senior goalkeeper Monique Jardell.
Â
It took until the fourth quarter for either side to break through, as Simon was the one to end the scoreless tie after MacKenzie Allessie received the ball off a penalty corner insert, who dished it to Simon for a shot that got past the Jardell's outstretched right pad.
Â
Simon's score with 11:52 remaining in the game sent MSU in desperation mode, as the Spartans were able to generate three legitimate scoring opportunities in the final six minutes of action. Senior Meredith Ross got the ball near the top of the circle and had a shot go wide with 5:39 left, while Rutherford had a shot blocked off a corner and senior Maddie McDonough had a shot barely miss the post a few seconds later.
Â
McDonough's shot would be the last chance for MSU to even the score, as PSU maintained possession long enough afterwards to secure the 1-0 victory.
Â
Nittany Lion keeper Brie Barraco made two crucial saves in the win, as Jardell posted 10 saves and broke up numerous other chances on the other end to keep the Spartans alive.
Â
Sunday marked the final game in East Lansing for five MSU players, as Ross and fellow fifth-year seniors Cara Bonshak, Maddie Babineau and Lia Sinisi, alongside fourth-year senior Lori Mack, were honored before the contest with their families.
Â
The five departing seniors will play their last game in the Green and White on Friday, Oct. 29 at Rutgers. The season finale is set for 2 p.m. in Piscataway, N.J.
