Spartans Close out Fall Season Tied for 5th Place at Williams Cup

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team closed out its final even of the Fall season with a tied for fifth place among 10 teams at The Williams Cup, hosted by the University of North Carolina at the Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C.
The 10-team field included seven schools ranked among the top-50 nationally by Golfstat.
The Spartans carded a final round score of 9-over par 297 and finished the 54-hole event with a tally of 12-over par 876 (293-286-297).
Host North Carolina topped the 10-team field with a score of 17-under par 847, nine shots ahead of second place Georgia (8-under par 856). Vanderbilt placed third at 1-under par 863, while N.C. State finished in fourth place (5-over par 869) and Michigan State tied for fifth place with Louisville.

"It was a bit of a missed opportunity against some really good teams," Head Coach Casey Lubahn said. "We played well and just didn't score efficiently. I'm really proud of the way we hung in there today with some tough playing conditions.
"Overall, it was a strong Fall semester for our program. We are ranked as high we have been since 2008 and we have a lot to build on this off-season."
Senior James Piot (Canton, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and freshman Ashton McCulloch (Kingston, Ontario / Holy Cross Catholic) were the top finishers for Michigan State, tying for 13th place with scores of 1-over par 217.
Piot finished with a 3-over par 75 on Tuesday after posting rounds of even-par 72 and 2-under par 70 on Monday, respectively. McCulloch had fired a 4-under par 68 in Monday's second round and closed out with a 4-over par 76.
Sophomore August Meekhof (Coopersville, Mich. / Allendale) tied for the best round of the day for the Spartans with a 1-over par 73. He finished in a tie for 26th place at 5-over par 221.
Senior Troy Taylor (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville South) shot a final round 6-over par 78 and finished in a tie for 48th place at 11-over par 227 (72-77-78).
Junior Brad Smithson (Jr., Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) tied Meekhof for the team's best round of the day with a 1-over par 73 and tied for 42nd place at 10-over par 226.
