EAST LANSING, Mich. – Earning the top spot in the women's 5K race at the Eastern Michigan Fall Classic last Friday, Michigan State sophomore Fatima Giron was named the Big Ten Cross Country Women's Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Giron paced all runners in the women's 5K in Ypsilanti, Michigan on Oct. 22, posting a time of 18:07.3 to grab first place. The Spartan sophomore was among four MSU runners to place in the top-5, as junior Courtney Krupp followed in second place by 3.6 seconds, while unattached freshman Kate Stewart-Barnett and junior Noelle Adriaens took third and fifth, respectively.
The EMU Fall Classic was Giron's second-best 5K time this season, as she ran an 18:00.8 second-place time at the Drenth Memorial in September.
This is Giron's first time being honored in the conference's weekly awards. Additionally, she is the third Big Ten Cross Country Women's Athlete of the Week from MSU this season, as senior Jenna Magness won the conference's weekly award on Sept. 29 and Oct. 20.
Michigan State will compete in the Big Ten Championships this Friday, Oct. 29, as the women's team seeks to win its third-straight conference title and the men look for their first since 1971.
