EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team fell 1-0 in a hard-fought battle against Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals Sunday afternoon.Â
The Spartans wrap their season with a 10-4-3 mark, finishing fourth in the Big Ten regular season with a 5-4-1 record.Â
Both teams battled evenly throughout the 90 minutes. The Spartans and Hawkeyes both finished with 17 shot attempts and seven shots on goal each, crediting both goalkeepers with six saves. Ava Cook led the offensive drive for Michigan State, totaling seven shot attempts. Cook and Zivana Labovic each took two shots on goal.Â
The Spartans put up strong defense early, as season-long anchor Lauren Kozal collected a pair of saves in net in the seventh minute. Michigan State came up with a huge try of their own 15 minutes later, as two shots were blocked by Hawkeye defenders in a flurry at the net and Labovic put a strike at the top right corner, saved by Iowa's Macy Enneking. The final ten minutes of the first half were mostly midfield action with both teams battling for the ball. Bella Jodzis, Dani Stephan and Justina Gaynor all had notable defensive performances for the Green & White. Michigan State had a 7-5 shot advantage in the first frame.Â
The second half started out with early shot attempts back-to-back from Cook, followed by a trade-off as the Hawkeyes got in several shots of their own, saved by Kozal. The Spartans struggled for posession late in the match, with a defensive battle going in Iowa's favor with a goal scored by Alyssa Walker in the 68th minute. Four minutes later the Hawkeyes threatened with three dangerous shots, all again saves for Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year Kozal.Â
Michigan State went for the comeback in the final 20 minutes, putting up several shots on the Hawkeye net. A free kick awarded to the Spartans at 88' also made for a close call for Iowa, but the Hawkeyes came away with the win in the final minutes in DeMartin Stadium.Â
Postseason All-Tournament honors and information on the 2021 NCAA Tournament will be released in the coming days.Â
