EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's soccer player Jordyn Wickes has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
This past week, Wickes contributed an assist and a game-winning goal as a key supporting player in Michigan State's league games against Nebraska and Iowa.
Wickes has seen action in all 12 games so far this season with three appearances in the starting lineup, the most of any freshman on the squad. She ranks third on the team in goals with two, and has also recorded two assists, a tie for best on the team. She has the third-most points of any Spartan with six.
On Thursday against Nebraska, Wickes recorded an assist on the second equalizing goal of the game. The goal from Justina Gaynor in the 71st minute, assisted by Wickes, brought the score to 2-2 as the Spartans avoided a loss to the Huskers and secured a point in Big Ten play on the road.
On Sunday, Michigan State brought home a 2-1 victory back from Iowa. With the score tied 1-1, Wickes came up with the game-winner when Gia Wahlberg's initial shot bounced off the crossbar. Wickes was there to dodge the Hawkeye's goalkeeper and punch in the goal for the Spartans, earning the 2-1 win.
This is the sixth time a Spartan women's soccer player has won Big Ten Freshman of the Week since the conference office added the weekly award in 2009. The last Spartan to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week was Paige Webber in 2019.
Up next, Michigan State hosts Ohio State on Sunday, Oct. 10. The match is scheduled to kick off at DeMartin Stadium at 1 p.m.
