CHARLESTON, S.C. – Graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz of the Michigan State women's tennis team won its first match on Thursday, but the doubles pairing dropped its second matchup in the main draw of the ITA Women's All-American Championships at the LTP Tennis Club in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
While rain postponed Wednesday's doubles matches at the ITA's, Thursday cooperated weather-wise begin the doubles portion of the event.
The duo entered the tournament as the No. 28 pairing in the country and drew the 41st-ranked pair, Emma Atonaki and Tamara Racine from Mississippi State, in the Round-of-32. Despite being a day later than originally planned, the Spartan combo came out of the match with an 8-6 victory over the Bulldogs' representatives to advance.
In the second round, Lewis and Pietrowicz were squared up against Texas A&M's Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith, the No. 3-ranked duo in the national preseason polls. Unfortunately for MSU, the Lewis/Pietrowicz pairing met its match, as the Aggies pair handed the Spartans an 8-1 defeat to end their run in the Round-of-16.
The rest of the Michigan State squad is set to begin play Friday at the Wildcat Invite, hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
