EAST LANSING, Mich. - Lauren Kozal of Michigan State women's soccer was named United Soccer Coaches First-Team Scholar All-American on Thursday afternoon.
United Soccer Coaches is the world's largest soccer coaches' organization, and strives to recognize student-athletes for their passion and accomplishments both on and off the field.
Kozal was the sole goalkeeper named first-team All-America, and one of only three juniors. Two other players from the Big Ten Conference were also named to the team.
A native of Ada, Mich., Kozal maintained a 3.84 GPA as a Finance major this fall. The honor is another of the many accolades she has received since the conclusion of the season. She was named the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten. She was previously awarded by United Soccer Coaches as an All-American and named All-Region. For her academic achievements, she has also been recognized as Academic All-District by CoSIDA.
Kozal, a native of Ada, finished the regular season with her 48th career start, making the start for the Spartans in the net for three-straight seasons. Kozal has had a momentous career for the Spartans and only continues to improve. This season, she ranked second in the Big Ten with a goals against average of .0495, a mark which is also on track to be among single-season and career records for a Spartan goalkeeper. She totaled 1,590 minutes in goal and has collected 75 saves, holding the highest save percentage in the Big Ten (.862). Her seven regular-season shutouts was the third-most in the conference, and she was second in saves per game with 4.41.
This is the third United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America honor in Spartan women's soccer history. Stacy Heller and Andrea Sied were both named Scholar-Athlete All-America in 2003.
