East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State sophomore goaltender Pierce Charleson (Aurora, Ontario) has been named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week, as announced by the Conference office on Wednesday,
The Spartan sophomore made 50 saves to backstop his team to a 4-3 road victory at Penn State on Saturday. The 50 saves was a career best, but also the most by any netminder in a game this season. She shares that mark with Vermont's Gabe Carriere, who also made 50 stops on Saturday in a 1-1 tie at Maine.
Charleson owns a 3.21 GAA and .910 save percentage in five starts this season. The Spartans have split their goaltending duties in five of eight weekends between Charleson and senior Drew DeRidder – who earned this same award on Oct. 26.
Michigan State owns a 9-6-1 overall record and 4-4 mark in Big Ten play. MSU plays its final B1G series of 2021 this weekend at No. 8/8 Notre Dame.
