Spartan Women’s Soccer Opens Season at Maryland Saturday

Michigan State will play a conference-only schedule this season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer will finally open the 2021 season on the road at Maryland on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 4:30 p.m.
"I am really excited for our team and staff." MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "It's been almost 16 months, and it certainly has been and continues to be a challenging time for everyone. We are extremely grateful to our medical team and our administration for all they've done to make this opportunity possible."
Saturday's season opener against the Terrapins has been moved to Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Ludwig Field at 2 p.m. The game was moved to the turf surface at the stadium as a result of inclement weather in College Park.
Last season, MSU finished 8-10-1 overall and were 1-9-1 in Big Ten action.
"We do have a nice combination of experience and newcomers. We're anxious to see them in action in a real game. We want to continue to grow throughout this season regardless of the inevitable bumps in the road. We hope to learn and improve and be playing our best soccer down the stretch," Saxton said.
Earlier this week, sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Kozal, sophomore defender Bria Schrotenboer and junior forward Gia Wahlberg represented the Spartans in the preseason honors list.
UMD finished last season with a 9-8-3 record, earning the team's first-ever Big Ten Tournament berth. The Terps went 5-5-1 in league play to finish sixth in the conference.
"Maryland is a very well-coached team with dangerous attack. I'm sure we'll both be dealing with the elements, so the mental toughness of both teams will be critical," added Saxton.
The game will be streamed on Big Ten Network+.
