East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State opens its 2021 rowing season on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.

As it has for most collegiate athletic programs around the country, it's been a long haul for the rowers – it has been 678 days since the Spartans had an opportunity to race, going all the way back to the May 2019 Big Ten Championships.

Head Coach Kim Chavers, hired in September 2019, has a chance to coach her first race not only as a head coach, but also here at Michigan State. Jokingly referring to her early tenure as the longest undefeated streak in Michigan State history, Chavers gets an opportunity to get her charges on the river this weekend.

There will be six schools lining up to race on Griggs Reservoir this weekend – host Ohio State, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, and Oregon State. The morning session begins at 9 am, and the afternoon begins at 1 pm. The Spartans will lineup primarily with Ohio State and Oregon State in the morning, and Michigan and the Buckeyes in the afternoon.

In this week's Pocock/CRCA national poll, seven Big Ten schools are among the top 16, including No. 6 Ohio State, No. 7 Michigan, No. 10 Indiana, No. 12 Rutgers, No. 13 Wisconsin, No. 15 Iowa, and No. 16 Minnesota, . MSU was receiving votes in the preseason poll, but are not currently in the second full week of the survey.

MSU dedicated a new shell on Tuesday, The Gruff Sparty. The Gruff Sparty is a Hudson USP 4+, and is Spartan green shell – the only boat in MSU's fleet that is green. It will debut in the varsity four race at 10:20 on Saturday morning.

Complete results will be posted at MSUSpartans.com on Saturday evening, and also on Row2K.com.
