Spartans topped by Hoosiers in second of three-game series.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball was defeated by Indiana, 10-4, Saturday afternoon at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field in game two of the three-game weekend series.
The Spartans were down 10-1 through eight-and-a-half, attempting a comeback with a run in the eighth and two in the ninth, before the rally ended for the final score of 10-4. IU got on the board in the top of the first, before the Spartans countered with a leadoff walk followed by two singles, scoring on an error to tie it up. The visiting Hoosiers plated four in the top of the third and three more in the sixth, later adding a pair of runs in the eighth.Â
Senior outfielder Bryce Kelley was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while freshman infielder Trent Farquhar was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored, touching home with MSU's first run of the game, as well as the Spartans' lone run in the eighth. The outfielder duo of senior Joe Stewart and sophomore Zaid Walker were both 1-for-4.Â
"There's a lot of good opponents in this league and you have to take advantage of the opportunities that you do get," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "We missed out on a couple opportunities when we had them, and I think it's a different ballgame if we execute early."
MSU sent three-straight pinch hitters to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, with freshman Jack Frank, senior Andrew Morrow and sophomore Casey Mayes all knocking hits, with Frank leading off with a single to left center, the Morrow followed with a double off the wall in left, then Mayes singled to left center to drive in Frank. Two batters later, Kelley reached on an error, driving in Morrow, but a strikeout ended the Spartan rally and the game.
"It's about taking advantage of opportunities," Boss said about the rally sparked by the pinch hitters. "Give those guys credit, they were into the ballgame mentally, even though they'd been sitting around for a couple hours, and took advantage of their opportunities. I think it's a good lesson for a lot of the young guys to learn, you've got to be ready when your number's called."
On the mound, freshman Adam Berghorst started and went 3.2 IP, chalking up a career-high five strikeouts, while yielding four hits and five runs, including two home runs in the third inning.Â
"Adam's performance wasn't bad today, his numbers weren't as good as what he's been in the past, I think he's been better. He threw a lot of pitches in three-and-two-thirds innings, and just couldn't limit the damage there with the big inning they had in the third," Boss said. "He'll be better; he's a talented kid and has a bright future ahead of him."
Berghorst was relieved by senior Sam Benschoter, who rang up a career-high tying 10 strikeouts, in 4.1 IP, scattering seven hits, allowing five runs. The 10 strikeouts matched Benschoter's 10 K outing vs. Maryland in the season-opener.Â
Freshman Nick Smith pitched a hitless and scoreless ninth, tallying one punchout. On the day, the Spartan pitching staff fired a season-high 16 strikeouts, bettering their previous high of 12 in the same aforementioned Maryland game in the season-opener on March 5.
With the loss, Michigan State is now 6-8, while Indiana is now 11-2, capturing the series heading into the series finale on Sunday.
"We just need to play cleaner baseball and just need to be fundamentally better. We can't get away with a lot of the mistakes that we made today. We're very capable, we're a good ballclub and they're a good ballclub, but you've got to play well," Boss said.
