East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's field hockey wasted no time in taking a lead on Thursday afternoon, scoring a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of the game, but Indiana scored a pair of goals to tie the game and then added a third early in overtime to beat the Spartans, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon.
It was the 11th-straight loss for the Spartans, who close out the regular season with a 1-13 overall record and a 1-7 mark in the Big Ten Conference. Indiana improved to 1-12 overall (0-8 in the Big Ten). The game did not count toward league standings as Big Ten coaches agreed prior to the season that the first meeting between teams – a 2-0 MSU win over Indiana on March 7 – would count toward the final league totals.
Indiana scored the decisive goal just 43 seconds into the first overtime period when Emma Martin found Peyton Becker in front of the circle and sent a pass from 30 yards. Becker flicked a shot past past junior goalkeeper Jade Arundell (County Kildare, Ireland/The Kings Hospital) to give the Hoosiers the 3-2 win.
The Spartans had jumped on top quickly, scoring 44 seconds into the game and then adding a second goal four minutes later.
In the first minute, sophomore Merel Hanssen (Maastricht, The Netherlands/Elzendaal College Boxmeer) sent a pass from the end line to freshman Lulu Fulton (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan School for Girls), who took a blast from the top of the circle to give MSU the early lead.
The Spartans increased their lead to 2-0 four minutes later when junior Isa van der Weij (Naarden, The Netherlands/Sint Vintus College) scored off a penalty corner inserted by freshman Emma O'Neill (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin).
Indiana scored twice in the second quarter, the first goal from Mary Kate Kesler coming in the 20th minute and then Anna Gwiazdzinski scoring just over a minute left before halftime.
After a back-and-forth third quarter, Michigan State out-shot Indiana, 6-1, in the fourth quarter and had several chances, including a pair of shots that were saved in the final 20 seconds.
Indiana out-shot Michigan State, 15-11, and the Spartans had a 6-5 edge in penalty corners. Arundell made four saves for MSU.
The Spartans will play Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament on Tuesday, April 20 (1 p.m., BTN) in Iowa City, Iowa. The winner of that game will face top-seeded Michigan on Wednesday, April 21 at noon.
