Spartans Set to Compete for Big Ten Championship

EAST LANSING – The Michigan State women's golf team will compete for a conference title this weekend when it heads to Maineville, Ohio, for the 2021 Big Ten Championships. The three-round event will take place Friday-Sunday at TPC River's Bend, home to each of the last three conference championships.
The Spartans are scheduled to tee off from the first hole between 9:24-10:09 a.m. in Friday's opening round at the par-72, 6,300-yard course.

THE LINEUP
Valery Plata, Paz Marfa Sans, Yurika Tanida, Valentina Rossi, Haylin Harris and Leila Raines will make up the Spartan lineup in the play six, count four format.

THE COURSE
Named by Golf Digest among the "Top 10 Best New Private Clubs in the U.S." after it opened in 2001, the Arnold Palmer-designed golf course has continued to amaze. TPC River's Bend has also been recognized as one of Ohio's "Best Courses in State" by Golf Digest in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2016.

SPARTANS AT THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Michigan State has won five of the last nine Big Ten Championships and 13 in total, which is second most in conference history. Under head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, MSU has seven titles (2001, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018). MSU won five consecutive Big Ten titles from 1974-78, and also claimed a conference crown in 1982 in addition to the five won by Slobodnik-Stoll. In the Big Ten record books, MSU is credited with eight Big Ten Championships, as the conference did not officially sanction women's sports until 1982.
Michigan State has finished in the top four at the Big Ten Championships in 13 of the last 15 years and 18 times under Slobodnik-Stoll.
The last conference tournament championship was played in 2019 where MSU took fifth place in what was a weather-shortened tournament (36 holes). Paz Marfa Sans was the Spartans' top finisher in 2019, placing fourth, which is the best finish by any current Spartan at the Big Ten Championships.

Valery Plata was named the Big Ten Co-Golfer of the Week on Wednesday for the second time this season … Plata tied for first place individually and helped the Spartans to third place as a team at last weekend's Indiana Invitational … The Spartans have placed in the top three in three tournaments this season, including each of the last two … Plata leads the Spartans in average at 72.3, followed by Yurika Tanida at 73.4 and Paz Marfa Sans at 74.1 … Both Plata and Marfa Sans have recorded their best finishes of the season over the last two tournaments as Plata placed second and first, respectively, while Marfa Sans sixth and eighth, respectively.
