East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State earned a decisive win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday in Ypsilanti, as the Spartans raced in the state of Michigan for the first time this season.

The teams engaged in a regular schedule of 2,000 meter races in the varsity and second varsity eight, varsity four, and novice eight, and remained on the water after 2K racing to have a modified 500-meter sprint race in all four boats.

MSU won all four 2,000 meter events and seven of eight races overall on the day and also had a strong showing from its fourth varsity eight (8:17.40), which beat EMU but fell to their teammates in the novice eight (7:51.67) in the same race.

MSU earned the win in the varsity eight by about six seats, clocked in a time of 7:03.20 - more than three seconds better than the host Eagles. Both the second varsity eight and varsity four won by open-water margins – the second varsity by about 36 seconds, and the four by more than 27.

MSU also earned some significant wins in the 500 meter sprint pieces. The largest margin came for the second varsity eight (1:42.92), which bested EMU by more than 15 seconds. The varsity eight completed the sprint in 1:44.57, and the varsity four was two seconds behind EMU, clocked in 2:00.89. MSU's novice eight won the final race in 1:50.00, while the EMU novice boat and MSU's fourth varsity eight had a near photo finish: EMU was clocked in 1:59.04, MSU's 4V in 1:59.89.

The Spartans return to Big Ten action next weekend when they head to Bloomington to take on host Indiana and Minnesota on Saturday.
