Dale England Cup Awaits Spartan Rowers Saturday

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's rowing team is headed to Bloomington for the Dale England Cup Regatta on Saturday, May 1. The Spartans will line up with both host No. 10 Indiana as well as No. 14 Minnesota.
The Dale England Cup is a team trophy, with the winner determined by finishes in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four (other race results do not factor into point scoring). Should there be a tie in the point standing, the crew finishing higher in the varsity eight race will earn the Cup.

The races, which begin at 9 am on Saturday morning, will be streamed live on Indiana Rowing's Facebook Page.
The Spartans have seen both crews previously, most notably at the Big Ten Invitational in mid-April in Cincinnati. Michigan State has yet to line up with the Hoosiers in a race this season, however – MSU did race Minnesota at the B1G Invite, earning a win over the Gophers in the varsity four.
The Spartans are a young squad with underclassmen populating much of the NCAA boats. Head coach Kim Chavers has been keen to keep the Spartans focused on their own improvement week-to-week. MSU is coming off a sweep of races last week in Ypsilanti, giving the athletes a confidence boost as the turn of the calendar into May means that Big Ten Championship races are around the corner.
The Spartans will bring five boats to the Dale England Cup – the three NCAA boats (eligible for Cup points) in addition to a novice eight and a second four, which will race Indiana. Minnesota will race just three NCAA boats (varsity and second varsity eight, and a varsity four).
Chavers is well acquainted with both the course and the Indiana rowing program, having spent three years on staff as the novice coach and head recruiter for both novice and walk-on athletes.
