MSU fall to the Scarlet Knights in the Big Ten Regional Weekend.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Michigan State women's soccer team had its season come to an end against Rutgers, 1-0, in double overtime to open Big Ten Regional Weekend on Thursday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. MSU was the No. 6 seed in the East Region, while RU was the No. 3 seed.
"I can't say enough about the fight that the team showed today, as I have said the team has grown so much over the last few weeks. I really thought we were going to get it done today; we were ready to go to a shootout, had our lineup ready. We got a bit unlucky. We played very, very strong and against a very good Rutgers team," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "I have been really pleased with how the team has grown, and you could sense it in the way they carried themselves today."
This was the Spartans' sixth-straight loss by a one-goal margin. Michigan State ends the season with a 1-10-1 record, while Rutgers moves on with a 7-2-3 mark.
Senior forward Michelle Herring had the first shot of the game which was saved by Scarlet Knight goalkeeper Meagan McClelland.
The Rutgers offense had a flurry of shots in the 31st minute. Spartan sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Kozal made a pair of saves to keep Rutgers off the scoreboard. After the first 45 minutes, neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Scarlet Knights out-shot the Spartans, 5-2 in the first half.
Julianne Leskauskas started the second half with a pair of shots to get the Scarlet Knight offense going.
In the 89th minute, Rutgers tried to find the game-winning goal with an Emma Misal shot after a corner kick. Kozal was able to make her seventh save of regulation to send the game to overtime.
After a relatively quiet first overtime, the second started with a bang. Freshman forward/midfielder Ellie Rogers had MSU's first overtime shot that went just right. Senior midfielder Bella Jodzis also added a shot attempt for the Spartans in the second overtime. Rutgers also had a pair of shots in the first three four miuntes of the second overtime.
The Scarlet Knights finlaly broke through in the 106th minute. Allison Lowrey start the play with a long pass from the left side. The ball for the head of Amirah Ali who snuck it past Kozal to end the game.
For the game, Rutgers out-shot Michigan State 17-5, including three players with three shots each. Kozal tied a season-high with seven saves, also doing so in a loss at Michigan on March 13.
"I think our team defending became a strength after a rough couple games. We give credit to everyone from attitude to effort. I am proud of them and proud of our seniors. We are very grateful for everything that they have brought to our program," Saxton said.
