Jack Beck, Farai Mutatu and Nick Stone earn second-team accolades.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four Michigan State men's soccer players earned Big Ten postseason awards, as announced by the league Friday.
Junior midfielder Jack Beck, junior foward Farai Mutatu and sophomore defender Nick Stone were named to the All-Big Ten second team, while freshman midfielder Jack Zugay earned All-Freshman honors. Beck, Mutatu and Stone are all earning their first All-Big Ten honors.
Beck, a native of DeWitt, Michigan, has had a standout junior campaign. He is one of only two Spartans to start all 10 games. Beck leads the team with two goals and both have been game-winning goals on the road. He scored the game winner against Penn State on Feb. 27 and the deciding goal in the regular-season final at Ohio State on April 4.
Mutatu, who hails from Haslett, Michigan, has been battling injuries all season, missing two games. He returned to action against Wisconsin on March 31. He has scored one goal this year, which was the game winner against Northwestern on March 11.
Stone, a native of Pinckney, Michigan, has been a fixture of the MSU backline this season. The Spartan defense has allowed only 12 goals in 10 games this year. He and Beck are the only players to have started all 10 games. Stone scored his only goal of the season against Michigan on March 23.
Zugay, a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, is the first Spartan to be named to the All-Freshman team since Beck and Mutatu in 2018. He has started nine of Michigan State's 10 games and scored his first collegiate goal against Wisconsin on March 31.
Indiana's Victor Bezerra was named Offensive Player of the Year, while his teammate Jackson Regan captured Defensive Player of the Year. Indiana's Roman Celentano was the Goalkeeper of the Year with Michigan's Marc Ybarra earning Midfielder of the Year honors. OSU's Laurence Wootton was the Freshman of the Year, while Indiana's Todd Yeagley was named Coach of the Year for the third-straight season.
The Big Ten also recognized nine Sportsmanship Award honorees. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Senior goalkeeper Isiah Handspike earned the Sportsmanship Award for the Spartans.
The sixth-seeded Spartans take on third-seeded Michigan in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 10 at 2 p.m. in a game that will be televised on the Big Ten Network. This is the second-straight season that the MSU and U-M will meet in the B1G Tournament
