Peterson Named B1G Co-Player of the Week

Second award in as many days for the Spartan senior infielder after he belted three home runs over weekend.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State's Bailey Peterson has been named the Big Ten Conference Baseball Co-Player of the Week, announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
The B1G award is Peterson's second accolade in as many days after being named to Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week list, announced by the publication Monday afternoon.
While this is Peterson's first career B1G award, it is MSU's fourth individual B1G accolade this season, as sophomore outfielder Zaid Walker was Player of the Week for the opening week on March 10, freshman pitcher Nick Powers garnered Co-Freshman of the Week honor on March 30, and senior pitcher Sam Benschoter collected Co-Pitcher of the Week recognition on April 27.
Peterson, a senior from Grandville, Mich., was recognized for his standout performance over the weekend, going 6-for-14 with eight RBI and four extra-base hits, including three home runs in the Spartans' three games at Rutgers, as Michigan State took two of three to capture its second-straight road series win. In Sunday's 14-8 Victory for MSU, Peterson bashed two home runs as part of going 4-for-5, ending a triple shy of the cycle, but knocking two home runs, a double and a single, and totaling seven RBI, helping the Green & White to a season-high run total and tying season-best 17 hits.
Peterson's seven RBI is tied for the most in a Big Ten game this season and Peterson is the first Spartan with seven ribbies since Brandon Hughes had seven on March 26, 2017 at Illinois.
Sunday's two-HR game by Peterson was his second game this season with two round-trippers, also going yard twice vs. Purdue on April 18, 2021 at Champaign, Ill. in the pod with Illinois. The two HR gave Peterson three homers in the series, as he went deep on Saturday, and he now leads the Spartans with six HR on the season. Peterson's three home runs over the weekend were part of MSU's eight home runs in the three games, a season-high for a series, after entering the weekend with just 12 round-trippers on the season.
The seven RBI by Peterson is an MSU individual season-high, while the four hits in a game ties an MSU individual season-high, marking the third game that a player had four hits.
Peterson and the Spartans wrap up the 2021 with their final homestand, May 28-30, hosting Iowa in season-finale action.
The weekend series opens on Friday, May 28 in Friday Night Lights baseball style with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Game two of the weekend is on Saturday, May 29 in a 4 p.m. start time, nationally televised on Big Ten Network. The final game of the season is on Sunday, May 30 with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch.
Sunday is MSU's Senior Day, as the Spartans will honor their seven seniors: Sam Benschoter, Trevor Hopman, Bryce Kelley, Andrew Morrow, Jarret Olson, Bailey Peterson and Joe Stewart.
