Farrah Edwards Added to Spartan Rowing Staff

East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State rowing coach Kim Chavers has announced the addition of Farrah Edwards to the Spartan program as an assistant coach. A former Big Ten athlete with coaching experience at top-25 rowing programs, Edwards will assist with all aspects of program coaching and management as well as have a keen connection with the current student-athletes over shared experiences.

"We are thrilled to add Farrah Edwards to our program," said head coach Kim Chavers, who embarks on her third season in 2021-22. "Farrah brings a wealth of competitive experience as a coach and a student-athlete which will help support our young roster."

"I am excited to join Coach Chavers, plus the rest of the Michigan State Women's Rowing program for the upcoming season," said the newest Spartan mentor. "I am especially looking forward to getting back to my Big Ten roots!"

Edwards comes to East Lansing with previous stops at prominent rowing programs under her belt. In the 2018-19 season, she was an assistant coach at Cal, helping the Bears to a sixth-place team finish at the NCAA Championship regatta. Cal's top boat ascended to a No. 1 ranking during the season and took fifth in a weather-altered varsity eight grand final in Indianapolis. On those Cal crews were five All-American selections, and a total of 14 earned Academic All-Pac-12 honors.

The previous year, (2017-18), Edwards was an assistant coach at Virginia, where the Cavaliers finished in a tie for fourth place in the team standings (UVA finished fifth overall due to a higher varsity eight finish). The Cavs won the petite final in both the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four, while the Second Varsity Eight earned a podium finish with a third-place performance. Those Virginia crews featured three All-Americans, and six athletes who went on to compete at the U23 World Rowing Championships that summer.

Edwards began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights were in their second and third seasons of Big Ten competition during her tenure (2015-17), and her recruiting and coaching helped Rutgers lay the foundation for the success they are currently enjoying in the top four of the Big Ten in each of the last two seasons.

Prior to her career coaching college crews, Edwards served for four years as Head Coach of the Dublin Crew club team. During her tenure with the Dublin Crew Edwards guided the girls four and girls lightweight pair to a top-four finish at the Midwest Junior Championships.

A collegiate rower herself, Edwards earned both a BA in Spanish (2009) and an MA in Sports Management (2011) at Ohio State. She was a member of the 2009 Buckeye varsity four which won a Big Ten title and the petite final at the NCAA Championship Regatta. She was also was a four-time Ohio State Scholar Athlete.
