EAST LANSING, Mich. - Two Michigan State men's tennis student-athletes head to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this weekend for the Milwaukee Tennis Classic beginning on Saturday, Sept. 18 and running until Monday, Sept. 20.
Carson Gates and Graydon Lair will represent the Spartans at the Milwaukee Classic. Gates will face Boris Kozlov of LSU in the first singles round of 32. Lair takes on Daniel de Honge from Pepperdine. Both have the chance to advance in the main draw or play in the consolation bracket.
The Milwaukee Classic is an ITA Gold-Level tournament featuring a 32-player draw for singles and a 16-team draw for doubles matches. Each player is guaranteed two singles matches and participation in one doubles match. The men's draw takes place the Saturday and Sunday at the Milwaukee Country Club in River Hills, Wisconsin, while the championships will occur on Monday, Sept. 20 at the Western Racquet Club in Elm Grove, Wisconsin.
"We are excited to officially kick off the [fall] 2021 season at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. This prestigious event is the ITA official opening tournament and features some of the best players in the country, with the winner receiving a wild card into the Fall National Championships in San Diego," said MSU 31st-year head coach Gene Orlando.
The Spartans welcome back 11 returners from the spring 2021 season and add two freshmen to the roster. Lair returns after earning a team-best five wins, at No. 5 and No. 6 singles during his freshman campaign.
