No. 25 Field Hockey Falls Short Against No. 24 Ohio State
9/17/2021 7:00:00 PM | Field Hockey
The victory improved the Buckeyes to 6-1 on the season and opened Big Ten play at 1-0. The Spartans saw their five-game winning streak snapped, sending them to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
MSU looked good early, as senior midfielder Maddie McDonough deflected a Nienke Bloemsaat shot following a penalty corner in the second minute. The goal, McDonough's first of the campaign and second of her career, set the tone for a high-scoring contest.
Cameryn Forgash brought the game even towards the end of the first period, taking a Sammy Stone pass out front, and beat MSU senior goalkeeper Monique Jardell to the netminder's right side in the 13th minute.
Ohio State would take its first lead of the day in the 23rd minute thanks to Katie Pyle, as Pyle deflected a shot from Delaney Lawler near the right post.
Senior captain Cara Bonshak knotted the score at 2-2 in the closing minutes of the first half, as the MSU midfielder deflected a Merel Hanssen shot through traffic with 2:11 left on the clock.
The Buckeyes grabbed the lead again in the 44th minute, with Sarah Charley getting the ball near the net and finding room to Jardell's left for the third OSU goal.
Hallie Brost increased the advantage to two in the 46th minute with a great shot from the left side, earning Megan McKenna an assist on the goal.
Down two goals as time ticked away, Rutherford buried one from deep out after senior Lia Sinisi inbounded a penalty corner, giving the Spartans life with 2:28 remaining. Unfortunately for the home side, MSU was unable to generate another shot and Ohio State ran out the clock for its 4-3 win.
"We had moments from today's game that we need to build off of and continue to gain confidence from," said head coach Helen Knull. "Our corner execution was good today and we created a lot of scoring opportunities. However, we need to capitalize on those - we allowed too many to go by us that were opportunities to take the lead. We struggled with our possession today, and that led to some shifts in OSU's favor. We cannot allow teams easy opportunities off our own errors. We will continue to learn, grow and be better tomorrow. We have another opportunity on Sunday to take advantage of."
The defending National Defensive Player of the Week, Aaliyah Hernandez, picked up the win for OSU in net with two saves, while Jardell suffered the loss despite making seven saves on her end.
Friday's meeting moved the all-time series to 42-24-3 in favor of the Buckeyes, and it is the first time since 2017 where the two sides had a game deciding by one goal.
Next up, Michigan State will host Central Michigan in a non-conference matchup on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. The Spartans then return to Big Ten play on Sept. 24 at No. 1 Michigan.
