MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Michigan State men's tennis student-athletes Carson Gates and Graydon Lair wrapped up play at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Gates and Lair each played in one main draw singles match on Saturday, followed by doubles action. Lair fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to Pepperdine's fourth-seeded Daniel de Jonge. Gates took on LSU's Boris Kozlov in a close match. Kozlov took the first set by a narrow 7-6 margin before Gates went ahead 6-3 in the second set to force a third. The pair battled to the end, but the match went in LSU's favor as Kozlov won the final set 7-6.
In the doubles draw, the pair fell 6-2 to their opponents from VCU. Gates participated in a back draw match on Sunday against Linus Carlsson Halldin of Pepperdine, which ended in a 6-2, 6-4 loss.
"Carson Gates and Graydon Lair competed well but fell short against national-level competition this weekend," head coach Gene Orlando commented. "It was valuable experience and will certainly prepare them both for the opportunities ahead."
The Spartans are back in action next weekend at the Notre Dame invite. The tournament runs from Friday, Sept. 24 to Sunday, Sept. 26 in South Bend, Indiana.
