MSU Men's Soccer Continues Homestand against Oakland Friday

The Spartans are halfway through a four-game homestand.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer continues its four-game homestand, taking on regional rival Oakland on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
After the first week of action, the Spartans stand 1-1 with a 2-1 win over Cleveland State  on Aug. 26 and a 2-1 heartbreaking loss to Akron on Monday. In both games this season, Michigan State has scored first.
PUTTING IN THE TIME
Against Akron, seven Spartans played the full 90 minutes. In just the second game of the season, MSU played only 14 players.
Eight Spartans have started both games this season. Seniors Michael Miller, Hunter Morse and Luke Morrell, along with junior Nick Stone, have played all 180 minutes this season.
OFF TO A FAST START
Prior to this season, senior midfielder Michael Miller had scored two goals in 56 games at MSU. In the first two games this year, he also already scored two, including the game-winning goal against Cleveland State on Aug. 26.
LOOKING AT THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland holds a 22-13-3 overall record against Michigan State. At DeMartin Stadium, the Spartans hold a 10-8-3 record. Prior to a 1-0 loss at Oakland in 2019, the Spartans had won four-straight games and six of the last seven meetings. In the last meeting in 2018, Michigan State defeated Oakland, 4-2.
In the loss in 2019, current Spartan Luke  Morrell was the opponent and scored the eventual game-winning goal as a Golden Grizzlies. The 2021 spring season was Morrell's first in the Green and White uniform.
Oakland started the season with an 0-1-1 record. Against Michigan, OU dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime. In the season opener at Butler, the Golden Grizzlies battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie.
Alessio Carbone has played every minute in goal making seven saves.
UP NEXT
Michigan State concludes its four-game homestand, hosting Bowling Green in a Labor Day battle on Monday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. The Spartans then hit the road for three-straight games at Tulsa on Sept. 11 and Notre Dame on Sept. 14. MSU will then open Big Ten action on the rod at Wisconsin on Sept. 17.

The Spartan have named four captains this season. Leading MSU will be seniors Jack Beck, Michael Miller, Farai Mutatu and Will Perkins.
PRESEASON HONORS
Michigan State had three players named to the Big Ten Players to Watch list. Michael Miller is a three-year starter for Michigan State. In his Spartan career, the midfielder has played in 56 games, starting 41. Hunter Morse enters his third year in goal for the Spartans. He has started 27 games in goal for MSU with three career shutouts. Farai Mutatu earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after the spring 2021 season. After battling injuries much of the year, he ended the season with one goal.
