EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer fought to the final seconds with Bowling Green on Thursday night, ending a close contest in a 1-1 draw with the Falcons.
The Spartans earned a quick advantage with a goal in the third minute. After a handball was called on Bowling Green, Zivana Labovic took the penalty kick for the Spartans, successfully sending the ball past the Falcons keeper into the right side of the net. It was the second goal of the season for Labovic.
The Spartans threatened several more times throughout the half. Lauren DeBeau had two shots on goal back-to-back, at the 11th minute and again at ten minutes later, this time a near miss on a header saved by Bowling Green's keeper. In the 18th minute, Ava Cook came up with a header in the box off a Spartan corner kick, again saved by Lili Berg of the Falcons.
Michigan State held strong on defense in the first frame, allowing just three shots, one on target, from Bowling Green. Cook and Samantha White both made excellent sliding plays in their effort to keep the ball out of MSU territory.
The half ended with a dangerous moment for BGSU as Jordyn Wickes took a long shot that hit the crossbar and bounced toward Ellie Rogers, whose shot on goal went just high of the net. Cook had another on-target strike in the 36th minute, keeping the Berg busy in the final minutes of the frame.
The Spartans held on to their 1-0 lead throughout most of the second half. Wickes had another shot narrowly miss the back of the net, and Allyson Childers came up with a shot in the 74th minute that went high and wide.
With just 90 seconds left to play in regulation, Bowling Green's Maya Dean sent a short kick over the hands of Kozal during a scramble for the ball for the equalizing goal, sending the game into a late-decision overtime.
Bowling Green had the first close call of the extra period with back-to-back corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize. The Spartans struggled to carry the ball into Falcon territory, leading to a necessary second overtime.
Despite nail-biting efforts from both sides in the final minutes of the second overtime, the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.
Michigan State (3-0-2) will hit the road for a string of away games next week, starting with a visit to Oakland on Thursday, Sept. 9. Bowling Green now stands 1-3-1 with the draw.
