URBANA, Ill. – The Michigan State women's tennis team is set to begin its 2021-22 season on Friday, Sept. 24 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships. The weekend tournament, hosted by fellow Big Ten member Illinois at the Atkins Tennis Center, features seven Spartans participating through Sunday, Sept. 26.
Seniors Lauren Lemonds and Nicole Stephens, junior Dagmar Zdrubecka, sophomores Ayshe Can and Marlo Schiffman and freshman Charlotte Gisclon will all take part in singles and doubles competition, while senior Maja Pietrowski will compete solely in singles action.
The Green and White are coming off a season that saw them advance to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament, falling to top-seeded Ohio State to finish with a 7-12 overall record.
Graduate student Mary Lewis, a two-time All-Big Ten honoree, will not compete in the opening weekend, with Lewis and Pietrowski slated to team up in the doubles portion of the ITA All-American Championships from Oct. 4-10 in Charleston, South Carolina. The Lewis-Pietrowski pairing enters the season ranked No. 28 in the country after going 8-4 last year in doubles matches.
Lemonds (10-7), Pietrowski (7-6) and Stephens (9-9) all had .500-or-better records in singles play last year, while the Lemonds/Can duo (5-3) is the only other returning pair to post a winning record aside from Lewis and Pietrowski.
In total, head coach Kim Bruno brings back 10 student-athletes from a season ago, with Gisclon being the lone newcomer for the Spartans.
After the opening weekend, MSU will prepare for the Michigan Invite, scheduled for Oct. 1-3 in Ann Arbor.
