MSU Men’s Soccer Drops Heartbreaker of Indiana on Alumni Day

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Big Ten-foe Indiana on Sunday on Alumni Day in front of over 2,000 fans at a rowdy DeMartin Stadium.
The Spartans now hold a 4-4-1 overall record, including an 0-1-1 mark in Big Ten action. Indiana improves to 5-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in league play.
As part of an Alumni Day doubleheader with the MSU women, Michigan State celebrated alums from six different decades at half time.
"I first want to thank all of the alums that came out. This Michigan State soccer family is special," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I thought that our guys put on a good performance with a really unfortunate result. I think we were dominant in almost every statistical category, the shots were 16-4. It just wasn't in the cards today, but if we keep playing the way that we are we will be all right."
Michigan State was the aggressor for the start of the match. Senior Farai Mutatu continues to be dangerous, registering a shot on goal in the 15th minute that was hauled in by IU goalkeeper Roman Celentano. MSU out-shot the Hoosiers 9-1 in the first half, but the game remained scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
In the 48th minute, Indiana was able to capitalize on its only shot on goal of the day. Patrick McDonald scored his first goal of the season on a play that began with a Hoosier corner kick. A scrum inside the box led to McDonald seizing the moment to put the ball away to the lower right corner.
The goal was all the Hoosiers would need despite the Spartans not going away quietly. In the 73rd minute, junior forward Gianni Ferri returned to the lineup and nearly tied the score, but once again Celentano was the hero for the Hoosiers.
In the 86th minute, senior midfielder Jack Beck had the last significant chance for MSU with a long blast that was stopped by Celentano.
MSU ended the game out-shooting Indiana, 16-4, while leading in corner kicks 5-3.
The Spartans will conclude their three-game homestand under the lights of DeMartin Stadium against Penn State on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
