Bonshak, Gros and Piot Honored as PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month

EAST LANSING, MICH. - Michigan State Athletics and PNC Bank are partnering to recognize the PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month. Throughout the 2021-22 season, deserving Spartan student-athletes will be recognized for displaying well-rounded achievement through leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in competition.

The honorees for September are Cara Bonshak (field hockey), Naya Gros (volleyball) and James Piot (men's golf).

Bonshak, a senior midfielder from Whitehall, Pa., is a civil engineering major. A three-time captain, she has started all eight games this season and is second on the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists, including two game-winning goals. For her career, she has appeared in 74 games, starting 52, while tallying 25 points (seven goals, 11 assists). Last season, she was named second team All-Big Ten and NFCHA All-Region. In addition to her success on the turf, Bonshak is the secretary on the executive board of SAAC, serves as the team liaison for Athletes for Hope, and has been extremely active with numerous community service efforts with her fellow MSU student-athletes.

Gros, a senior middle blocker from New Orleans, La., is journalism major. She is one of the nation's top defensive players at the net this season, ranking third in the country with 1.79 blocks per set. In addition, she is fifth on the team with 46 kills. For her career, Gros is top-10 in the MSU record book in total blocks and blocks per set. Off the court, she is a member of MSU's Women's Leadership Council, MSU's Diversity and Leadership Committee and the Big Ten's Anti-Hate & Anti-Racism Coalition Committee.

Piot, a finance major from Canton, Mich., returns to MSU for a fifth season as one of the most decorated golfers in program history. His career scoring average of 72.07 currently sits atop the school record book. This summer, Piot made history becoming the first player from the State of Michigan to win the U.S. Amateur Championship. He has started this season strong, tying for medalist honors at the Island Resort Intercollegiate. Last season, Piot garnered PING All-America honorable mention while producing the lowest single-season scoring average in program history at 71.33. He also advanced to the NCAA Championships, becoming the first Spartan to compete as an individual at the national championships since 2002. Aside from excelling in the classroom as a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten selection, Piot has been involved with many community service initiatives with his fellow Spartans.
