LINCOLN, Neb. – Michigan State women's soccer played a roller coaster of a game against Nebraska on Thursday night, battling to a 2-2 draw with the Huskers on the road at Hibner Stadium.
The Spartans pick up a point in Big Ten play with the tie, moving to 7-1-3 on the season.
Scoring was stagnant for the majority of the first half until the Huskers got themselves on the board in the 33rd minute. Nebraska's Haley Peterson snuck one past Spartan goalkeeper Lauren Kozal ten feet out from the net. Offensively, Nebraska topped Michigan State in the first half with six shots to MSU's three. The Huskers totaled four shots on target, while Ava Cook was the only Spartan to record a shot on goal in the first frame.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Michigan State came up with the equalizer. Cook ended a scoring hiatus with her first goal since Aug. 30 against Florida Atlantic. Dribbling up the right side of the pitch, Cook dodged two Husker defenders and took a strike with her left foot, sending the ball arcing over the head of Nebraska's keeper into the top right corner of the net. The solo goal was her fourth of the season.
Nebraska went up again five minutes later to earn back the lead. Abbey Schwartz struck quickly from the right side, just narrowly sending the ball past Kozal's diving save attempt.
Facing a 2-1 Husker lead with 20 minutes left in regulation, the Spartans stayed resilient. It only took four minutes for the Green & White to find an equalizer. Justina Gaynor came up with her second goal of the season, set up by Jordyn Wickes for a wide-open shot high above the goalkeeper's head to the top right corner of the Nebraska net. An offside penalty was momentarily in question, but the goal stood for a 2-2 score.
Two overtime periods passed with neither team able to capitalize and come out with the win. The Spartans had three shot attempts in the 20 minutes and held the Huskers to just one shot. Both teams were unable to land a shot on target in overtime.
Michigan State led the offensive charge in the match with 14 shot attempts, while Nebraska totaled 13. The Huskers found more accuracy, with nine shots on goal to MSU's three. The Spartans struggled with penalties throughout the contest, totaling 20 fouls and five offside calls. Lauren Kozal earned seven saves in goal, three short of a season-high.
The Spartans continue their road stand this Sunday, October 3 against Iowa. Kickoff in Iowa City is set for 1 p.m. C.T.
