Field Hockey Blanks Ohio, Moves to 4-0
9/5/2021 3:56:00 PM | Field Hockey
ATHENS, Ohio – Posting its third-straight shutout, Michigan State defeated Ohio, 2-0, in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Pruitt Field, closing out MSU's season-opening road swing.
Â
The victory improved the Green and White to 4-0 on the campaign, the best start for the program since the 2010 squad opened that season with seven-straight wins. For the host Bobcats, the loss shifted them to 1-3 overall.
Sunday's win marks the first time since Sept. 7-13, 2002 that the Spartans have held their opponents scoreless in three-straight contests. Additionally, senior Monique Jardell became the first MSU goalkeeper to record back-to-back shutouts since teammate Jade Arundell did it in 2019.
Â
Junior Merel Hanssen continued her scoring ways after a two-goal performance in Friday's win over Northeastern, scoring in the eighth minute off a pass from senior Cara Bonshak to give MSU an early lead over Ohio. The goal made Hanssen the first MSU player to score in back-to-back games since then-junior Isa van der Weij tallied goals against Northwestern (2/27) and Indiana (3/7) during the 2020-21 season.
Â
The Spartans extended their advantage to 2-0 in the 21st minute, as a pass from sophomore Lulu Fulton allowed van der Weij to beat the Bobcats' goalkeeper, good for the senior forward's second goal of the season.
Â
Neither side was able to convert on their chances in the second half despite MSU putting four shots on goal in the third period alone.
Â
Jardell made two saves in the win, and the senior has now held opponents scoreless in her last 145:24 of action, dating back to last season. Nele Graner suffered the loss, making four saves for the Bobcats.
Â
"It is great to head home with two wins and we are looking forward to playing on our home field next weekend," said head coach Helen Knull. "Mo had a fantastic weekend in net and it was great not to allow any goals. Merel really made an impact on our attack and had good support from many other Spartans, which we will look to build off of going into our next game."
Â
MSU moved to 16-2 in the all-time series against Ohio, giving the Spartans three-straight wins over the Bobcats.
Â
The next time the Spartans play will be the team's home opener on Sept. 12, when the Green and White host Ball State in a 1 p.m. contest at Ralph Young Field.
