HARRIS, Michigan – The Michigan State men's golf team won its season-opening tournament on Monday with a dominating performance. The Spartans topped the 10-team field of the Island Resort Intercollegiate at Sage Run Golf Club with a 15-under-par 849 (278-281-290), which was 23 shots better than second-place UCF and 31 strokes ahead of third-place Michigan.

"The first nine holes of the tournament really set the tone for what could be a special year," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "We were 10-under-par early and never looked back on a very, very demanding golf course."
Leading the way for the Spartans were James Piot (70-68-71) and Troy Taylor II (69-70-70), who tied for medalist honors at 7-under-par 209. Piot shot a 1-under-par 71 on Monday, while Taylor fired a 2-under-par 70.
Taylor bogeyed the first two holes on Monday, but responded with four birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 2-under-par. Piot was 2-over-par through seven, but picked up three birdies and eight pars the rest of the way.
"Troy's maturation on the golf course has been impressive and fun to watch and it's nice to see him pick up a win," Lubahn said. "He's an extreme talent that has grown into his own.
"James is coming off a hectic couple of weeks and was able to find something and dig down, which speaks volumes about his character and drive. It's awesome that they could share the title."
For Taylor, it's the first individual title of his career. For Piot, it marked the fourth time he's claimed a title or a share of a title and it was his second Island Resort trophy as he last claimed medalist honors in 2019.
August Meekhof tied for sixth place at 1-over-par 217 (72-70-75). His 3-over-par 75 on Monday included an eagle on the 525-yard third hole.
Bradley Smithson tied for seventh place, one shot back of Meekhof at 2-over-par 218 (71-73-74).
In his first collegiate tournament, freshman Ashton McCulloch tied for 10th place at 3-over-par 219 (68—74-77).
Rookie Satchel Pierce played as an individual and finished 30-over-par 246.
Michigan State is back in action next Sunday and Monday, Sept. 12-13, at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minnesota.
