East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's basketball freshman guard Max Christie (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) was named the Big Ten Conference Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday. He shared the award with Ohio State guard Malaki Branham.
This is the fourth time this year Christie has won the award and the third time in the last five weeks.
Christie is the first Michigan State player to earn Freshman of the Week honors four times in a season since Jaren Jackson Jr. did so during the 2017-18 season. In 2016-17, Miles Bridges was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week five times.
The Spartans, ranked No. 10 in the country in the Associated Press poll and No. 9 in the ESPN Coaches poll, improved to 13-2 overall, and 4-0 in the Big Ten, with a 79-67 win over Nebraska at home in the team's only game of the week.
Christie scored a career-high 21 points, connecting on 7-of-9 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point land. He added four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
The freshman leads MSU in minutes played (30.2) and has scored in double figures seven times this year. Christie is third on the team in scoring with 10.4 points per game, while adding 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists.
Michigan State is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 12, hosting Minnesota at the Breslin Center (7 p.m.). The game will air live on BTN, with Lisa Byington and Stephen Bardo calling all of the action.
