EAST LANSING, Mich. - Head Coach Kim Chavers announced staff changes to the Michigan State rowing program on Friday afternoon.Â
Volunteer assistant coach Kayla Brock will move into the open assistant coach position for the upcoming Spring 2022 season. Brock joined the Spartan rowing staff in fall of 2021 and spent extensive time working with the novices and first-year varsity athletes.Â
Brock is a Manhattan, Kansas native and graduated from Kansas State in 2017 with a degree in Life Sciences. She then went on to earn master's degrees in 2020 in Public Health and Community Development. She was a four-year letterwinner on the Kansas State rowing team.Â
"Kayla brings an extensive knowledge of novice rowing to our staff, having coached novices at KState and having been a novice rower herself at the collegiate level," Chavers commented. "Her positive energy and commitment to improvement have been great contributions to our program and staff."
Brock worked previously as a volunteer coach with the Kansas State program. She was involved in training, crew lineups, running workouts and practices, and assisted with recruiting. Prior to the volunteer assistant job, she served as a graduate assistant for the Wildcats from 2017-2020. While a GA, she was responsible for the development and growth of the first-year athletes. She familiarized these student-athletes with the mechanics of the sport of rowing and created specific training programs for novices.Â
As a member of the Wildcat rowing staff, she trained nine true freshman up to the racing squad in 2018-19 and five in 2019-20. She helped coach two freshman to win a silver medal at the Big 12 Championships in 2020 as part of the 2v8 crew. In 2019, her freshmen 1v4 crew won bronze at the Championships.Â
