White Secures Big Ten, TopDrawerSoccer Weekly Honors

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer graduate defender Samantha White took home Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors and landed a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week, each organization announced Tuesday.

White becomes the sixth different Spartan player to garner Big Ten weekly accolades in 2022 and hauls in the first Defensive Player of the Week award of her career. Michigan State has booked a total of eight Big Ten Weekly Honors this season, which stands as a new program record for the Green & White. Additionally, the McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, native becomes the sixth different Spartan named to a National Team of the Week and earned her first national award as an individual in the process.

In last week's games against Indiana and No. 5 Northwestern, White was a force to be reckoned with at the centerback position. Against the Hoosiers, White saw 73 minutes of work and helped direct MSU to its 10th shutout of the season while allowing Indiana a total of four shots in the game. Against Northwestern, White notched the lid-lifting goal in the 13th minute on a powerful strike from about 20 yards out.

A veteran in the MSU backline, White has helped steer the Spartans to the top of the Big Ten in scoring defense, yielding only 0.44 goals per game overall and a mere 0.38 scores per contest against league opponents. Michigan State has shutout a total of 10 opponents in the 2022 campaign, including five of MSU's eight Big Ten Conference matchups.

The Green & White prepare for their final week of regular season play in 2022, as the Spartans hit the road for a nationally ranked clash with Ohio State on Thursday, Oct. 20, with kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Michigan State will conclude regular season play back home in East Lansing before a national television audience on Big Ten Network on Sunday, Oct. 23. The Spartans challenge Rutgers in a 2 p.m. start at DeMartin Stadium.
