Field Hockey Drops Non-Conference Contest to Miami

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Brought down by a pair of Miami goals in the second half, Michigan State field hockey fell to Miami, 2-0, in a non-conference matchup at Ralph Young Field on Sunday afternoon.

Michigan State drops to 8-8 (1-6 B1G) on the year with the loss, while Miami moves to 10-6 (5-1 MAC).

The game served as Michigan State's senior day, where Spartan seniors Isa van der Weij, Jade Arundell, Monique Jardell, Devin Reilly, Georgia Davies and Valerie Radvany were recognized before the game.

A defensive battle through the first half, the game remained scoreless until the third quarter when Miami's Luli Rosso scored off a pass from Jenna Kirby for a 1-0 RedHawk lead in the 39th minute. The Spartans countered with four consecutive shots but were unable to cut into the lead.

The Spartans opened the fourth quarter with a penalty corner shot from senior Celina Riccardo but failed to tie up the game. Miami took a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute with a goal from Lilly Petersen to secure the win, as senior Merel Hanssen's shot in the final two minutes of the game was saved by the RedHawks' keeper.

Hanssen and sophomore midfielder Ellie Rutherford both recorded a team-high three shots each. Riccardo and van der Weij both recorded a pair, while Reilly, Davies and sophomore midfielder Maddie Lawlor recorded one apiece. Eight of the Spartans' 13 total shots came on goal.

Miami held a slight 14-13 edge in shots, while the Spartans held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. Jardell made nine saves in goal.

The Spartans return to action on Friday, Oct. 28 at Iowa for their final Big Ten regular season game at 5 p.m. MSU then returns home to host Kent State for Title IX Day on Sunday, Oct. 30. Both games will stream on B1G+.
