Spartan Women’s Basketball Improves to 4-0 with 85-39 Win over Oakland

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Behind a balanced attack, the Michigan State women's basketball team dominated Oakland 85-39 Tuesday night.
MSU improves to 4-0 for the fourth-straight season. With the loss, the Golden Grizzlies suffer their first loss of the season, falling to 2-1.
Despite the lop-sided win, only one Spartan reached double figures with junior guard Gabby Elliott leading the Spartans with 12 points. Nine Spartans scored at least five points with senior forward Taiyier Parks, sophomore guard Matilda Ekh, freshman guard Theryn Hallock and sophomore forward Isaline Alexander all scoring nine points.
The first quarter was a tight affair with the Grizzlies leading 11-8 in the first period. Michigan State then went on a 12-2 run to take a 23-15 lead at the end of the quarter. At the end of the first quarter, Hallock led all scorers with seven points. MSU shot 52.6 percent from the field.
In the second quarter, foul trouble began to plague MSU with senior forward Parks having to sit with two. Despite the foul problems, the Spartans scored nine of the first 10 points of the period to jump out to a 32-16 advantage. MSU's 16-0 run came to a halt with 1:24 left in the half when the Grizzlies scored their first field goal of the quarter. At the half, Hallock led all scorers with nine points.
Michigan State once again kept Oakland in single digits in the third quarter, out-scoring the Grizzlies 22-5. The Spartans closed out the quarter with a 14-2 run over the final 6:38. Allowing only five points in the quarter, Michigan State tied the school record for fewest points allowed in the third period.
Parks had a stellar fourth quarter, scoring all nine of her points in the final 10 minutes. Several less experienced Spartans saw significant time 15 of the 16 players that dressed played in the period.
Michigan State concludes its five-game homestand on Thursday, Nov. 17, taking on Florida A&M at 7 p.m.

- MSU moved to 18-4 against Oakland and picked up its 14th-straight win over the Golden Grizzlies, not suffering a lost since Feb. 9, 1982
- MSU held Oakland to just four points in the second quarter, setting the record for fewest points allowed in a second quarter in program history for the second game in a row … MSU's previous record, five, was set on Nov. 13 against Western Michigan … The Spartans also tied the MSU record for fewest points allowed in a third quarter, holding the Golden Grizzlies to five points.
- Sophomore Isaline Alexander tied her career high in points with nine.
- The Spartans have won every game this season by 30-plus points … The win over the Oakland marked the second margin of victory by over 40 points for MSU.
- Junior guard Gabby Elliott led the team in scoring with 12 points, her third game in double figures this season … Elliott went 4-for-6 from the field.
- The Spartans recorded a season-high 43 first half points … The Spartans' previous season-high was 40 points vs. Purdue Fort Wayne on Nov. 10.
