Spartan Baseball Announces 2023 Signing Class

MSU inks six to 2024 roster.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball head coach Jake Boss Jr., announced the first members of the Spartans' 2023 signing class, signing six players for the 2024 roster.Â
Five of the six players are natives of the state of Michigan, with the sixth coming to MSU from California.Â
While more players will be added to the 2023 Michigan State baseball signing class, the first six members of the class include Garrett Brewer (Eau Claire, Mich. / Berrien Springs HS), Gannon Grundman (Howell, Mich. / Hartland HS), Jaxon Huffman (Norton Shores, Mich. / Mona Shores HS), Hunter Long (Ladera Ranch, Calif. / Capistrano Valley Christian School), Ryan McKay (Clarkston, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS) and Gavin Moczydlowsky ("Muzz-uhd-lau-ski") (New Boston, Mich. / New Boston Huron HS).
Of the six players who have signed with the Spartans for the 2023 class so far, five of the six are pitchers and the sixth is an infielder.
"We are extremely excited to add this new group of Spartans to our baseball family here at Michigan State," Boss said. "Our recruiting coordinator, Coach Sikes, and our pitching coach, Coach VanAmeyde, have worked tirelessly to put this class together and have done a tremendous job on the recruiting trail. This class is very balanced with a stable of arms that have a chance at contributing immediately, combined with position players who fit the mold of toughness that has become synonymous with a Spartan baseball player. MSU Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Graham Sikes on Brewer: Garrett is a multi-sport athlete that is a bit of a later bloomer in baseball, but someone who has an extremely high ceiling. He already possesses solid secondary stuff and his fastball is just starting to climb with higher and higher increased speed. Garrett is a kid that's not afraid of hard work and once he gets to college and can focus on one sport, we expect him to take off. We're very excited to have Garrett in our program.

MSU Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Graham Sikes on Grundman: Gannon might remind Spartans fans of some other good left-handed pitchers over the years like Alex Troop and Cam Vieaux. Gannon, like Alex and Cam, is a tall and athletic lefty. His pitchability is very good right now and his velocity is coming along nicely. At 6-4, 200 pounds, he has all the physical attributes we were looking for and Gannon also possesses the mental makeup of a quality pitcher. We're excited to watch him grow over the next year and beyond!

His fastball is extremely firm and he has a legitimate swing-and-miss slider. Jaxon loves to put in the hard work to continue to get better, and he loves the game, so we don't see any reason why he wouldn't thrive in college. We are really excited to have Jaxon join our program.

At 6-7, 240 pounds, there is no telling how hard he might throw one day. Â I feel like we plucked a needle out of a haystack to go into California and get Hunter. Â

MSU Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Graham Sikes on McKay: Ryan has played on one of the best high school teams in the country in Orchard Lake St. Mary's, Â during his high school career and he's been a mainstay for that team. The first thing you notice about Ryan is his energy, he is in constant motion on the field and a fierce competitor. Right after noticing his energy, you will quickly notice that he can really, really hit. He's hit everywhere he's played: every tournament, level, grade, etc. Â Ryan is a very complete hitter and terrific player and we are excited to have him join our program.Â

MSU Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Graham Sikes on Moczydlowsky: Gavin is a ballplayer. Watching Gavin play, the game never seems too fast for him. He is competitive and assertive. His has very impressive velocity on his fastball and his breaking ball has a chance to be a true swing-and-miss pitch. He's a good athlete and he can handle all of the peripheral things a pitcher has to do, very well. We can definitely see Gavin being a power arm down the line for us. Â

MSU Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Graham Sikes on Moczydlowsky: Gavin is a ballplayer. Watching Gavin play, the game never seems too fast for him. He is competitive and assertive. His has very impressive velocity on his fastball and his breaking ball has a chance to be a true swing-and-miss pitch. He's a good athlete and he can handle all of the peripheral things a pitcher has to do, very well. We can definitely see Gavin being a power arm down the line for us. Â
