Jonathan Stout Named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Year

Four Spartans were honored by the conference.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer had four players garner Big Ten Conference postseason accolades, with the All-Big Ten awards announced Friday by the conference.
Freshman forward Jonathan Stout was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Year for his standout rookie campaign. He is the first Spartan to garner Freshman of the Year honors since All-American Giuseppe Barone in 2016. Overall, Stout is the fourth MSU player to earn the accolade. He shares the 2022 award with Cole Cruthers of Rutgers. A native of Wyoming, Michigan, Stout also earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team by leading the Spartans in scoring with four goals and four assists for 12 points.
Jake Spadafora, a native of Northville, Michigan, joined Stout on the All-Freshman Team. This is the first time since 2018 that MSU has had two players on the All-Freshman team when Jack Beck and Farai Mutatu earned a spot on the squad. Spadafora has one goal and one assist for three games in 15 games this season.
Graduate senior goalkeeper Owen Finnerty, who hails from Walled Lake, Michigan, earned his first All-Big Ten, capturing a spot on the second team. He has started all 16 games in net for the Spartans this season. He is the first MSU goalkeeper to earn all-conference accolades since fellow Walled Lake native Jimmy Hague in 2018. Finnerty is first in the league in saves with 74 and save percentage (.733).
Rutgers' MD Myers was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Ohio State's Laurence Wooten earned Midfielder of the Year honors. Indiana's Daniel Munie was the Defender of the Year, while OSU's Keegan McLaughlin was Goalkeeper of the Year. Maryland's Sasho Cirovski captured Coach of the Year accolades.
The Big Ten also recognized nine Sportsmanship Award honorees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Sophomore defender Josh Adam earned the Sportsmanship Award for the Spartans.
Sixth-seeded Michigan State takes on third-seeded Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
