Sixth-Ranked Spartans Fall to Penn State in B1G Title Game
11/6/2022 5:55:00 PM | Women's Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michigan State's historic run through the 2022 Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament came to a close in the championship game, as Penn State defeated MSU by a 3-2 margin on Sunday at Lower.com Field.
In recognition of their superlative performances throughout the tournament, senior forward Lauren DeBeau and junior midfielder Justina Gaynor both landed a spot on the B1G All-Tournament Team. For the Nittany Lions, senior forward Ally Schlegel and senior goalkeeper Katherine Asman were named the tournament's Offensive and Defensive Most Outstanding Player, respectively. Senior midfielder Cori Dyke also earned a selection to the All-Tournament Team.
The Spartans yielded just their second defeat in the 2022 campaign, with both losses coming against opponents that were nationally ranked by United Soccer Coaches. MSU holds a 16-2-3 overall record on the year and took home the Big Ten's regular season championship following a 9-0-1 campaign against league opponents. Penn State improves to 13-4-3 overall and collected its ninth Big Ten Tournament title in program history.
Despite the final score, Michigan State outplayed Penn State for the vast majority of the match, out-shooting the Nittany Lions by a 12-9 margin and nearly matching their total shots on goal, 4-3. PSU tallied one more corner kick attempt than the Green & White, amassing a 7-6 edge in the category. The Spartans maintained possession of the ball for 62 percent of the match. DeBeau led MSU in the box score, sending in the only Spartan offensive score and racking up five total shots.
The Nittany Lions booked the opening shot, but the Spartans roared back down the field with a vengeance moments later. In the fifth minute, MSU worked for an aggressive attacking opportunity that was cleared by Penn State to the right. DeBeau collected the clearance and bent a magnificent cross over to the left side of the field. Gardiner headed it towards a Spartan attacker, but a Penn State player headed it into the back of their own net for the opening score.
Troubled by the defensive lapse, PSU responded on the other end of the field later on in the period, as the Nittany Lions evened the score up at one goal apiece. Mieke Schiemann and Cori Dyke sent the ball into a mob of players in the 38th minute, and Kaitlyn MacBean managed to separate herself enough to send in the equalizer. MSU mounted a strong response, but was unable to add another score before the match entered halftime deadlocked.
The second half began much like the first, with both squads attempting to find their footing in the opening minutes. Penn State added its second score in the 54th to take a 2-1 lead. Senior midfielder Payton Linnehan lobbed a ball up to Schlegel, which she headed into the back of the net. It took the Green & White around 20 minutes more to find the tying-goal, as DeBeau marched with the ball along the border of the penalty area. The Shelby Township, Michigan, native squared up, and sent yet another highlight-reel goal past the goalkeeper's reach. Moments later, Schlegel logged her second goal of the match in the 82nd on assists from Schiemann and junior midfielder Natalie Wilson. Penn State held on for the 3-2 finish.

Opening Statement
"I am really proud of the fight that our group had. This has been the biggest stage for our group. Thursday, I think we were a little shell-shocked at the environment. It is such a great facility, and it was such a big moment. I don't think we played our best soccer or played with the same intensity that we usually do. Today, I think we came out ready to go. I think this will be really valuable not just for this team, but to our program moving forward to have this experience of playing for a second trophy this season, not just here on Lower.com, but on national tv once again. Collectively, we are obviously disappointed in the result, but it is really hard to win games when you concede goals and don't capitalize on a couple changes that we had."
On getting the team to re-focus on the NCAA Tournament...
"I think the experience this week, playing three knockout game certainly helps. Obviously, it is the same structure as the NCAAs. Again, playing quality opponents along the way with different styles of play and very different strengths. Penn State is a team with a lot of pedigree and has been in postseason play year in and year out. So, I think the way we prepped and the way this team is wired, like I just told them in the locker room, that's the opportunity we have. This isn't season ending. This isn't the end of the line. This isn't moving on to the offseason, or on to the next phase of our life. It's us coming back, resting and recovering and coming back together on Tuesday. Maybe that frustration and disappointment can help drive us or re-ignite some additional fire."
