MSU Women Head in to Holiday Break with a 98-50 Win over Prairie View A&M

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Nine Spartans scored at least five points, as the Michigan State women's basketball team cruised to a 98-50 victory over Prairie View A&M Tuesday night at the Breslin Center.

With the win, the Spartans have captured two-straight wins, improving to 8-5 this season, while Prairie View A&M falls to 3-8 this season.

Four Spartans reached double figures led by 19 points from graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel, while sophomore guard Matilda Ekh added 12 points all scored in the third quarter. Senior guard Moira Joiner scored 11 points with six rebounds and two steals, while graduate guard Stephanie had a season high with 10 points. For the second-straight game, sophomore forward Isaline Alexander reached double figures in rebounds with 10.

The Panthers were led by 16 points off the bench by Diana Rosenthal.

Michigan State had a massive night on the boards out rebounding the Panthers, 59-30.

After a sluggish start, Michigan State scored eight points over a 1:55 span to open up a 24-15 lead. The Panthers fought back to make it a 26-20 game at the end of the first period after a TaMiracle Taylor bucket. The Spartan offense got going thanks in part to 17 combined points from McDaniel and Joiner.

Another 6-0 run in the second period gave MSU the palindromic 32-23 lead with six minutes left in the quarter. The spurt ballooned to 15-0 as Michigan State jumped out 41-23 after a Visscher layup. Despite still struggling from the field, the Spartans were solid on the boards, out-rebounding the Panthers, 28-15 at the half. Visscher was solid in the second quarter with five points in six minutes of action.

Ekh caught fire with three-straight treys, as part of a 15-0 Spartan run in the third quarter. Michigan State was able keep its advantage, as seven different players scored in the period, led by Ekh's 12 points. Michigan State out-scored Prairie View A&M 33-13 in the third stanza.

Twelve different players stepped on the court for MSU in the final 10 minutes, led by six points from freshman guard Theryn Hallock. Fellow freshman guard Abbey Kimball added five points, as well. Michigan State took its biggest lead of the game, 48 points with 1:14 remaining after a second-chance jumper by Kimball.

The Spartans will take a quick break for the holidays before ending the 2022 portion of the schedule against Indiana on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 3 p.m.

Michigan State Women's Basketball Post-Game Notes: Prairie View A&M

• Michigan State's starting line-up of graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel, sophomore guard/forward Matilda Ekh, sophomore guard DeeDee Hagemann, sophomore forward Isaline Alexander and redshirt-senior guard/forward Tory Ozment was the Spartans' second-straight game with that starting five ... it is MSU's fifth different starting line-up.

• The Spartans' 98 points was their second-highest scoring output of the season, as well as back-to-back 90+ point games, after 91 vs. Detroit Mercy (12/18/22) ... it was also MSU's fourth game with 90+ points behind a season-high 109 vs. Florida A&M (11/17/22) and 97 vs. Western Michigan (11/13/22).

• Michigan State's 48-point winning margin was the Spartans' third-largest of the season, and second 45+ point margin in a row, after a 50-point margin in the 91-41 Victory for MSU over Detroit Mercy (12/18/22) and behind a 65-point margin in 109-44 triumph over Florida A&M (11/17/22).

• Michigan State beat Prairie View A&M Tuesday in the first-ever meeting between the Spartans and the Panthers ... MSU is now 2-0 this season against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) teams, along with the win over Florida A&M (11/17/22).

• The Spartans pulled down a season-high 59 rebounds Tuesday, as well as the second-consecutive 50+ rebounding outing, after 52 vs. Detroit Mercy (12/18/20), in addition to the fourth game with 50 or more boards, topping the previous season-best of 57 boards vs. Florida A&M (11/17/22) and 53 vs. Purdue Fort Wayne (11/10/22), along with the seventh game with 40+ rebounds ... MSU is now 8-1 this season when out-rebounding the opposition.

• Michigan State dished out 21 assists for the second game in a row, as well as the Spartans' fourth game this season with 20+ helpers, improving to 5-0 when distributing 20 or more assists.

• The Michigan State bench out-scored Prairie View A&M's bench, 47-24, as the Spartan reserves scored 40+ points for the second game in a row and the seventh time this season ... MSU's bench had 45 points last time out vs. Detroit Mercy (12/18/22) ... Tuesday's 47 points is the third-highest of the season behind 53 points, done twice, first in the season-opener vs. Delaware State (11/7/22) and again vs. Florida A&M (11/17/22), along with also scoring 42 vs. Central Michigan (11/19/22), 41 against Purdue Fort Wayne (11/13/22) and 40 vs. Oakland (11/15/22) ... the Spartans are now 8-2 when their bench out-scores the opposition's reserves.

• MSU held Prairie View A&M to just six points in the second quarter, marking back-to-back games in limiting the opposition to single-digits in the second stanza, after holding Detroit Mercy to eight points in the second quarter in its last game (12/18/22) ... the Spartans have held the opponents to single-digits in three quarter of the last eight total, also holding Detroit Mercy to single-digits in the first quarter ... overall, is it is the 13th quarter this season that Michigan State stymied the opposition to single-figure scoring in a quarter.

• The Spartans netted 33 points in the third quarter, which ties their season-high for most points in a quarter, matching the 33 scored in the fourth quarter vs. Florida A&M (11/17/22) ... it also tops their most in the third quarter, bettering 31 points in the third stanza vs. Western Michigan (11/13/22).

• Michigan State netted 11 3-pointers for the second game in a row, tying the second-most this season for the third time, also making 11 treys vs. Detroit Mercy (12/18/22) and Florida A&M (11/17/22) ... Tuesday was the sixth game with double-digit 3-pointers, including fifth at home, behind a season-high 13 vs. Western Michigan (11/13/22) and 10 triples done twice, vs. Delaware State (11/7/22) in the season-opener and also at Central Michigan (11/19/22) for the lone road occasion.

• After 14 players saw action last game vs. Detroit Mercy (12/18/22), all 15 active players saw action Tuesday, with 12 of the 15 getting in the scoring column, and 12 players also snared at least one rebound.

• Four players posted double-figures for the second game in a row, as MSU improved to 4-0 when four score in double-digits.

• Graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel netted a game-high 19 points, getting back into double-figures for the first time in the last three contests after a season-long streak of back-to-back games in single digits, which came on the heels of a six-game streak in double-digit scoring ... overall, McDaniel has posted double-figures in nine games this season ... McDaniel tied a season-high with three 3-pointers for the third time this season, doing so vs. Oregon (11/27/22) and Purdue (12/5/22), and posted her fourth game with multiple 3-pointers, after three in a row, with the aforementioned three triples vs. Oregon and Purdue book-ending two treys vs. Georgia Tech (12/1/22).

• Sophomore guard/forward Matilda Ekh posted 12 points for her second double-figure game in a row, as well as the eighth of the season 27th of her career ... all 12 points came on 3-pointers, as Ekh netted four treys for the second-straight game, as she now has eight 3-pointers in the last two games as part of 12 triples in the last four contests ... Ekh's four treys Tuesday tied her second-most 3-pointers behind a season-high and career-best tying six 3-pointers vs. Western Michigan (11/13/22) as well as fifth game with three or more triples ... it was her fourth-straight game with multiple treys as part of the 10th time this season, only making a single 3-pointer in two of her 12 games played.

• Senior guard Moira Joiner netted 10 points off the bench, for her third-straight double-figure outing as part of her seventh double-figure scoring contest this season and 20th of her career ... Joiner tallied two 3-pointers for her fourth game this season with multiple treys.

• Graduate guard Stephanie Visscher netted double-digits for the second time this season with 10 points, two points shy of her season-high of 12 points in the season-opener vs. Delaware State (11/7/22).

• Sophomore forward Isaline Alexander was one point short of her second-straight double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds Tuesday ... it was her second-straight double-figure rebounding total after 10 boards vs. Detroit Mercy (12/18/22).

• Redshirt-junior guard Julia Ayrault was also one point and one rebound shy of her third career double-double with nine points and nine rebounds ... Her nine boards tied her season high ... Ayrault also added season-highs of four steals and three assists ... the four steals was her first game with multiple swipes, while the three assists was also her first game with multiple helpers this season ... she also tallied one block, marking the third-staright game with at least one rejection and the seventh game this season with at least one swat.

• Sophomore guard DeeDee Hagemann and freshman guard Theryn Hallock shared game-high honors by each dishing out six assists ... it was Hagemann's second-highest of the season behind seven vs. Georgia Tech (12/1/22) and her 10th game with three or more assists ... Hallock tied her season-high for the second-time, also distributing six helpers vs. Western Michigan (11/13/22), and posted seventh game this season with three or more assists.
