Men’s Golf Completes First Round of Puerto Rico Classic

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State men's golf shot a 7-under par 281 and stands in 11th place among 13 teams at the 29th Puerto Rico Classic at the Grand Reserve Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The course is the site of the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open, which will be played in three weeks.
In a very competitive field that includes eight teams ranked among the top-50 in the country by Golfstat, including four top-15 teams, MSU's score of 7-under par is shot five shots outside the top-five teams in the field.
First Round Results
No. 12 Georgia leads the field at 23-under par 265, with No. 1 Oklahoma in second at 20-under par 268. Purdue (16-under par 272) is in third, while South Carolina, East Tennessee State and East Tennessee State (12-under par 276) are tied for fourth place.
Senior James Piot (Canton, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) leads the Spartans, sitting in a tie for 22nd place after a 3-under par 69.
Freshman Ashton McCulloch (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Catholic) and sophomore August Meekhof (Coopersville, Mich./Allendale) each posted rounds of 2-under par 214 and are tied for 34th place.
Junior Brad Smithson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) and senior Troy Taylor (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) carded rounds of even-par 72 and are tied for 60th place.
The Puerto Rico Classic will continue Monday and will conclude Tuesday. Michigan State will be paired with Wisconsin and Maryland for an 8:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start.
