Spartans Fire Best Round in Program History at Puerto Rico Classic

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State men's golf team fired a program-best 19-under par 269 on Monday in the second round of the 29th Puerto Rico Classic at the Grand Reserve Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The Spartans are in fifth place among 13 teams in a field that includes eight teams ranked among the top-50 in the country by Golfstat, including four top-15 teams.

The course is the site of the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open, which will be played in three weeks.
MSU had four players shoot rounds of at least 4-under par or better and moved up six places in the field with a two-round score of 26-under par 550.
No. 12 Georgia leads the field at 43-under par 533, with No. 1 Oklahoma in second at 39-under par 537. No. 8 Tennessee is third at 32-under par 544, while host Purdue (No. 21) is at 27-under par 549, with the Spartans one shot behind.
Michigan State's 19-under par 269 is the best 18-hole team score in program history and is tied for the sixth-lowest round in the history of the Puerto Rico Classic.
The Spartans were led on Monday by sophomore August Meekhof (Coopersville, Mich./Allendale), who fired a 7-under par 65, with seven birdies on the day. Meekhof is tied for eighth individually at 9-under par 144.
Freshman Ashton McCulloch (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Catholic), junior Brad Smithson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) and senior Troy Taylor (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) all finished with scores of 4-under par 68. McCulloch, who was at 2-under par after the first round, is tied for 19th place at 6-under par 144. Smithson and Taylor are tied for 32nd place at 4-under par 140.
Senior James Piot (Canton, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 42nd place at 3-under par 141.
The Puerto Rico Classic concludes on Tuesday. Michigan State will be paired with Purdue and the College of Charleston for an 8:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start.
