Clouden Moves Up to No. 2 in All-Time Scoring in Loss to No. 6/5 Michigan

Senior guard Nia Clouden earns her first 20-point game since Feb. 10.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - With 22 points, senior guard Nia Clouden moved up to No. 2 in Michigan State career scoring in the Spartans 62-51 loss to No. 6/5 Michigan on Thursday night at the Crisler Center.
With the loss, Michigan State falls to 14-13 overall and 8-8 in Big Ten action. Michigan improves to 22-4 overall and 13-3 in league contests. Thursday's loss splits the season series between the Spartans and Wolverines, after MSU's 63-57 win over UM on Feb. 10 in East Lansing.
Clouden passed All-American Aerial Powers (2013-16) for No. 2 on the Spartans' career scoring list. Clouden finished with 22 points, giving her 1,833 for her career. Tori Jankoska (2013-17) is the program scoring record holder with 2,212 points. Freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann was the only other Spartan in double figures with 13 points.
The Wolverines were led by 28 points by Naz Hillmon, who also added eight rebounds.
Behind five points from Hagemann, the Spartans jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. Forcing four turnovers in 3:13, Michigan State increased its lead to 12-4. The Wolverines were held without a field goal for over six minutes, before a Hillmon layup made it a 14-7 game. Hillmon scored nine of Michigan's first quarter points, as MSU led after 10 minutes, 14-10.
In the second quarter, it was a battle between two of the best in the country, Clouden and Hillmon. Back-to-back treys by Maddie Nolan gave Michigan its first lead 28-26 with under four minutes left in the half. The Spartans responded with two-straight buckets from Hagemann to re-take the lead. Hillmon ended the quarter with eight points, while Clouden scored nine. The half ended tied 32-32.
The Wolverines scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to take a 40-34 lead. The Wolverines led for much of the third period, but Michigan State stayed within striking distance. Despite Clouden's six points in the period, the Wolverines led 48-44, heading in to the fourth quarter.
Michigan scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take its first double-digit lead, 54-44, leading to a MSU timeout. The Wolverines pulled away after MSU went over four minutes without a field goal. The Spartans were held to 1-for-14 from the field in the final 10 minutes of action, scoring only seven points.
Michigan State now prepares for its final regular-season finale, hosting No. 17/17 Ohio State on Sunday, Feb.27 at 2:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. MSU will say goodbye to its four seniors: Tamara Farquhar, Laurel Jacqmain, Alisia Smith and Nia Clouden.
