Women’s Tennis Travels to Cincinnati for Two Matches

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Coming off its first home match and first win of the season, the Michigan State women's tennis team heads to Cincinnati, Ohio this weekend for a pair of contests.
The Spartans open on Saturday, Feb. 5 when it plays host Xavier at 2:30 p.m. from the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club. MSU then returns to Eastern Hills at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6 to face Virginia Tech in a neutral-site showdown.
In their last match, the Spartans roared back after dropping the doubles point to grab a 5-2 victory over DePaul in MSU's home opener this past Sunday. Senior Nicole Stephens and Ayshe Can won their doubles draw, 6-2, but the pairing of graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz fell, 7-5, in their match, as did the duo of freshman Charlotte Gisclon and sophomore Marlo Schiffman by an identical score. Can and Stephens put MSU in front with singles victories, as Can defeated Maddie Yergler (6-3, 6-4) and Stephens took down Marija Jovicic (6-4, 6-2). Lewis lost to Yuliya Kizelbasheva (6-4, 6-4), but MSU did not drop a match the rest of the afternoon. Pietrowicz fought back after being down in the second set for a 7-5, 7-5 win over Lenka Antonijevic, while senior Lauren Lemonds overcame a slow start to defeat Eleanor Nobbs (0-6, 6-4, 7-5) and Gisclon closed it out with a victory over Valentina Martin (6-3, 3-6, 6-3).
Can (5-2), Gisclon (5-5) and Pietrowicz (5-3) are all tied for the team lead with five singles victories, while Can is the lone Spartan with an undefeated dual record at 2-0 and has won her last four solo matches. On the doubles side, Lewis and Pietrowicz have a team-leading seven wins, while junior Tia Mukherjee and Monique Karoub are second with three doubles victories.
Xavier split their two matches last weekend to move to 3-2 on the season, losing at Memphis, 5-2, but then rebounding with a 4-3 win against South Florida the next day. Anne-Sophie Courteau, Imani Graham and Anna Smith all lead the Musketeers in duals with 3-2 singles records, highlighted by Graham going 3-1 in the No. 1 spot. For doubles, Graham and Anna Roggenburk are 2-1 in dual matches this season, as are the pairing of Courteau and Kay Lyman.
Virginia Tech began its spring season with a 6-1 victory over East Tennessee State on Jan. 22, winning two out of three doubles matches and claiming all but the No. 2 court in singles action. The biggest showdown came in doubles play, as the Hokies' freshman pair of Dariya Radulova and Semra Aksu downed the No. 44 duo of Fernanda Carvajal and Yunuen Elizarraras from ETSU, 6-3.
Michigan State will return home on Wednesday, Feb. 9 for a 4 p.m. match against Arizona.
