CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Michigan State women's tennis team picked up its second-straight win on Saturday afternoon, defeating host Xavier by a 5-2 score at the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club.
Claiming the doubles point and winning four singles matches, the Spartans moved to 2-1 in dual matches, while Xavier shifted to 3-3 on the season.
Action started with doubles competition, as the duo of senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can continued their hot start to the spring by defeating the Musketeers' No. 2 pairing of Kat Lyman and Anne-Sophie Courteau in a 6-2 win. Xavier registered a doubles victory when Anna Roggenburk and Anna Smith edged out freshman Charlotte Gisclon and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka, 6-3, on the third court. Coming down to the top pairings, graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz had to go to a tiebreaker to beat Ahmeir Kyle and Imani Graham, but the MSU duo got the 7-6 (7-3) win to lock up the doubles point for the Spartans.
Can quickly got to work in singles play, tallying a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lyman on the fourth court to give MSU a 2-0 lead. Her doubles partner, Stephens, finished right behind her by defeating Roggenburk in the No. 3 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 score. Pietrowicz clinched the dual match for the Green and White when she put together a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Graham on the No. 2 court. Kyle then edged Lewis in the No. 1 match (7-5, 3-6, 10-4), but Gisclon defeated Courteau by a 6-2, 6-4 score to make it 5-1 MSU. Ending the day was Smith and senior Lauren Lemonds going three sets, where Smith was able to pull off a 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 win.
"Props to like Nicole and Ayshe, being the first ones done in doubles and and singles today," said head coach Kim Bruno. "That just sets the tone for rest of the team to follow suit. They led the charge today and it was a really, really good team win. It's tough to play on the road and it's tough to get really any road win, right? But to do it with four-straight points and do it just like that is awesome. Even the girls that were left after we clinched it had opportunities too, so everyone put themselves in a position to win today. It was a great team effort, and we got to do it again tomorrow."
The Spartans move to 6-0 in the all-time series with Xavier with the 5-2 victoyry. Saturday extended Can's singles win streak to five matches, while her and Stephens have now won two-straight on the doubles court. The doubles win by Pietrowicz and Lewis was their eighth victory together this season and their first since the ITA National Fall Championships in November.
Michigan State wraps up the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 6 when the Spartans play Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. in the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club.
