East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team shot an 8-under par 280 in the final round and finished in fifth place among 15 teams at the ninth annual Colleton River Collegiate, held at the Colleton River Club in Bluffton, S.C.
Georgia Southern, who held a six-shot lead entering the final round, fired a 14-under par 274 in Tuesday's third round and finished with a 54-hole score of 30-under par 834, nine shots clear of second-place Cincinnati. The Bearcats, who had an 18-under par 270 in the final round, moved up four places in the team standings and finished at 21-under par 278.
Led by tournament co-medalist Luke O'Neill, who tied for first place at 14-under par 202, Kansas State placed third at 20-under par 844.
The Spartans finished with a 54-hole score of 15-under par 849 (286-283-280) to finish in fifth place, two strokes behind Ohio State (17-under par 847).
"Overall, it was a gratifying week to host one of the best events in college golf," MSU Head Coach Casey Lubahn said. "Our guys just didn't play very well. We just didn't play well enough to score like we needed to, so that was disappointing. We've had a busy few weeks to start the season and with the ramp-up to the Master's for James (Piot) coming up, the other guys have a lot of data to work off now, so I think we'll be good in the long run."
Freshman Ashton McCulloch was the top finisher for MSU, tying for sixth place at 7-under par 209, including a final round 4-under par 68.
Senior James Piot was two shots back, finishing in a tie for 12th place at 5-under par 211. Piot, who had a 4-under par 68 in Monday's second round, closed with an even par 72.
Senior Troy Taylor carded a 2-under par 70 in the final round and tied for 18th place at 2-under par 214.
Sophomore August Meekhof finished in a tie for 30th place with a score of 1-over par 217, including a 2-under par 70 in the third round.
Junior Bradley Smithson tied for 51st place at 7-over par 223.
Michigan State will be back in action on April 16, playing in The Rutherford at Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa.
