Ryan Szczepaniak Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Spartan hurler leads B1G freshmen pitchers with two wins.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball pitcher Ryan Szczepaniak was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Szczepaniak, a native of Woodhaven, Michigan, earns not only the first Big Ten accolade of his Spartan career, but also the first B1G honor of the season for Michigan State, for his performance last Sunday, March 6. He earned the win on the mound in the 9-3 Victory for MSU over nationally-ranked West Virginia in Minneapolis at the Cambria Classic played at U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings.
The Spartan right-hander fired 5.0 IP with four strikeouts, yielding three hits and one earned run to improve to 2-0, stymieing WVU bats. After a leadoff single and later a hit batter in the first inning, settled in and retired seven Mountaineers in a row.
Szczepaniak improved to 2-0 with the victory and is the first B1G freshman pitcher to earn two wins this season, and only one of 11 pitchers in the league overall with two or more wins.
He has 12.1 IP on the season, with a 2.92 ERA, sharing the team-lead with 14 Ks.Â
Szczepaniak is slated to be the starter of MSU's game in Greenville, S.C., on Sunday, March 13 against Kansas in a 1 p.m. start time, as the Spartans wrap up the second leg of their Spring Break trip, spending the rest of week at their home-away-from home, Fluor Field, home of the Greenville Drive.Â
MSU will open action facing Clemson on Wednesday, March 9 at 6 p.m., before hosting the 2022 First Pitch Invitational, Friday-Sunday, March 11-13, playing Kansas for the second-straight weekend, along with Cincinnati and Western Carolina.
The Spartans will tangle with the Bearcats of Cincinnati on Friday, March 11 in a 2 p.m. first pitch, followed by taking on Western Carolina on Saturday, March 12, also in a 2 p.m. start time, before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday, March 13 against Kansas in a 1 p.m. first pitch.
