East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State raced a bevy of ranked crews in both sessions on Friday to start the Big Ten Invitational.Â
Â
Sixteen crews are in Sarasota, Florida this weekend at Nathan Benderson Park to preview the NCAA regatta racecourse, including all eight Big Ten crews and an assortment of top-ranked crews from around the nation. Five of the non-B1G teams in the field are in the national top 20, including No. 2 Stanford, No. 7 Brown, , No. 10 Duke, No. 2 Stanford, No. 12 Virginia, and No. 18 Tennessee,Â
Â
In the morning session, the Spartans lined up with No. 18 Tennessee, No. 20 Indiana and Dartmouth, and earned three third-place finishes in the varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four. MSU was third in the second novice eight / third varsity four race behind Rutgers and Ohio State.Â
Â
The competition went up a level in the afternoon session with No. 2 Stanford, No. 10 Duke, and No. 17 Rutgers lining up with the Spaartans, and the Green and White raced against nearly all Big Ten teams in the novice eights and third varsity four, finishing seven seconds ahead of Tennessee in the third four and ahead of Indiana in the second novice race.Â
Â
Saturday's races feature the Spartans vs. Notre Dame, Iowa, and Dartmouth – the first two are receiving votes in this week's CRCA poll, much like Michigan State. The third four and novice eights will get another steady diet of Big Ten competition, with Indiana, Iowa, and Minnesota lining up with the Spartans with Notre Dame joining the third four race as well.Â
