Spartans Take Lead after Two Rounds at the Rutherford Intercollegiate

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team has four players among the top-25 overall and is in first place among 14 teams after two round of play at the Rutherford Intercollegiate.
The 54-hole tournament is being played on the par-71, 7,171-yard Penn State University Blue Course. Teams played 36 holes on Saturday and will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday, starting at 7:30 a.m.
Day One Results
The Spartans finished the day with a 36-hole score of 1-over par 569 (284-285).
Michigan State holds a four-shot lead over Penn State, who is second at 5-over par 573, with St. Mary's (Calif.) in third at 6-over par 574, Seton Hall fourth at 7-over par 575 and Eastern Michigan rounding out the top-five teams at 12-over par 580.
Junior Brad Smithson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) fired a 3-under par 139, including a 2-under par 69 in the opening round, and is tied for second place to lead the Spartans.
Freshman Ashton McCulloch (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Catholic) and sophomore August Meekhof (Coopersville, Mich./Allendale) are tied for seventh place at even-par 142. Meekhof posted consecutive rounds of even-par 71, while McCulloch shot a 1-under par 70 in the first round.
Senior Troy Taylor (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) finished at 4-over par 146 for the day and is tied for 22nd place after posting a 1-over par 72 in the afternoon.
Senior Parker Jamieson is in 78th place at 16-over par 158. He shot a 6-over par 77 in the second round.
The Spartans will play with St. Mary's (Calif.) and host Penn State in Sunday's final round.
