YPSILANTI, Mich. - Michigan State rowing completed a sweep of Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon, winning all five races with an impressive showing by the varsity crews and first-year rowers in the novice races.
The Spartans raced their first, second and third varsity eight boats as well as their novice eight and varsity four fleets in a series of 2,000 meter races with the Eagles. In events with more than one MSU boat racing, Spartan crews took both first and second place ahead of Eastern Michigan.
"We had a really great day of racing with a couple of our crews getting their first opportunities to compete this spring," Head Coach Kim Chavers commented. "I'm happy with the way the team responded after a good week of practice, and we were able to come away with wins in each of our events. We're excited to build on these results and look forward to racing next weekend in Columbus."
Four of the five races were won by large open-water margins, with MSU's novice eight crew besting Eastern Michigan by more than a minute. The varsity eight race ended in a victory for MSU by 16 seconds as the crew crossed the finish line at 7:09.66.
The second varsity eight race went down to the wire, with Michigan State's boat finishing with just .04 seconds to spare ahead of Eastern Michigan, clocking in a time of 7:29.56 to EMU's 7:29.60. Both of MSU's varsity four boats finished over 15 seconds ahead of the Eagles, with times of 8:16.42 and 8:35.52. The third varsity eight crew finished in 7:43.82, 49 seconds ahead of their opponents.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend for racing with Ohio State, Indiana, Notre Dame and Oklahoma at the OSU Regatta in Columbus.
