MSU posts highest-ranked win since 2014.
DETROIT, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball was boosted by two runs in the first inning and a three-run sixth frame on the way to a 6-2 Victory for MSU over No. 12 Notre Dame Tuesday night at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. The Spartans registered their highest-ranked win since an 8-7 victory over No. 1 Oregon State on Feb. 22, 2014 in Surprise, Ariz.
While Tuesday was MSU's first game at Comerica Park since 2019, it was the Spartans' 11th game at the Tigers' stadium, as Michigan State improved to 9-2 all-time at Comerica, winning the last five in row.
Along with being MSU's highest-ranked win since 2014, Tuesday's win over No. 12 Notre Dame was the Spartans' first win over a ranked team since a 3-0 Victory for MSU at No. 22 Michigan last year on March 22, 2021 in Ann Arbor.
Tuesday's MSU win was boosted by solid pitching, solid defense and timely hitting. Michigan State also took advantage of three Notre Dame errors, as the Spartans scored their first two runs in the first inning without a hit, and didn't register a hit until the third.
"It was a really special night, for getting to play here at Comerica, and thanks to the Tigers organization for letting it to happen. Notre Dame was really fired up to be here and they're really, really good. They're a really well-coached team, they play hard and don't usually beat themselves, which makes the win for our guys extra special," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I thought we played well tonight in all facets, we got good pitching, we defended well, we got timely hits when we really needed to and really grinded-out some at-bats in big spots and made things happen, and the running game was there for us tonight, guys did a good job of being aggressive. That was kind of the message tonight, that we can play with anyone and we don't take a backseat to anybody. That's a really good ballclub that we beat tonight, so I'm really proud of our guys."
Michigan State had six hits on the night, led by sophomore outfielder Jack Frank going 2-for-4 with a run scored, as the lone Spartan with multiple hits.
Sophomore infielder Brock Vradenburg's two-run double in the sixth capped a three-run inning, while fellow redshirt-freshman, catcher Bryan Broecker was 1-for-4 with an RBI single also in the sixth, and scored on Vradenburg's double.
Sophomore infielder Mitch Jebb was 1-for-3 with a run scored, drawing two walks and swiping two stolen bases. Senior designated hitter Zach Iverson was 1-for-2.
Redshirt-junior outfielder Peter Ahn and sophomore infielder Trent Farquhar didn't tally a hit, but Ahn generated three runs off two Notre Dame errors and scored one walk along with drawing a walk. Farquhar also drew a pair of walks and scored two runs.
On the mound, sophomore starter Harrison Cook went 5.2 IP with four Ks, scattering five hits, while yielding two runs, before turning the game over to the Spartan bullpen. Junior Wyatt Rush got out of a bases-loaded jam with one out, ringing up a strikeout and popup to leave them loaded. Classmate Andrew Carson pitched the eighth and ninth, striking out the side in the eighth and then after yielding a two-out double in the ninth, chalked up his fourth K in two innings to end the game and spark the Spartan celebration.
MSU got two runs in the bottom of the first without a hit, as Jebb and Farquhar both walked, then moved up a base on a passed ball. Both Jebb and Farquhar scored on an ND error off the bat of Ahn for a 2-0 advantage.
Cook struck out the side in the top of the fourth.
Notre Dame scored a run in the third and a run in the top of the sixth on a double to knot it up at 2-all.
The score didn't stay tied for long, as Michigan State plated three in the home half of the sixth. Frank sparked the rally with a leadoff single up the middle and stole second, and a batter later stole third. After Ahn walked, Broecker knocked a single through the left side to drive in Frank. After a Notre Dame pitching change, Vradenburg rudely greeted Irish reliever Jack Findlay by smacked an opposite-field double down the left field line, as Broecker and Ahn scampered home to put MSU ahead, 5-2.
Notre Dame threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but Rush rang up a strikeout and then got a popup to Vradenburg at first to slam the door on the rally and leave 'em loaded.
The Spartans extended their lead in the seventh, as Farquhar walked. Two batters later Mayes struck out but reached first on a wild pitch. Ahn followed and reached on a fielding error that allowed Farquhar to score and put MSU on top, 6-2, to complete the night's scoring.
Michigan State returns home to host Purdue Fort Wayne in make-up game from March 23, on Wednesday, April 27 in a 6:35 p.m. start time at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field.
